What is a self-service kiosk?

A self-service kiosk is a walk-up screen where a visitor completes a task without staff—wayfinding, catalog lookup, hours and tickets, donor information. It is distinct from a staff-operated checkout terminal, even when both use a touchscreen.

The design bar is higher than signage. Someone has to succeed alone, often in a noisy lobby, so contrast, type, captions, and clear flows matter as much as the content.

Libraries, campuses, hotels, visitor centers, and museums all run self-service kiosks. The same no-code project can be a directory on one display and a story on another.
